癌细胞通过自噬，可以食用和消化这些有毒蛋白质和受损的细胞器，从而抑制了上述效果。此外，自噬降解产生的氨基酸、乙酰辅酶A和丙酮酸，将通过anaplerotic反应补充三羧酸循环中间体，从而支持线粒体代谢和癌细胞的生物合成，赋予它们额外的生存能力。因此，在有效产生Fenton或Fenton-like反应时，应同时出现适当的干预措施来干扰自噬降解过程，以提高治疗癌症的效果。
