The Phonological Study on Yueyang Dialect

Abstract: Yueyang County ’as a common border wit’ Yueyang City, Linxiang County, Pingjiang County and Miluo County. It lies to t’e border on Xiang Dialect and Gan Dialect. T’e dialect does not reac’an agree about affinity. One kind of opinion points out t’at it belongs to Xiang Dialect, t’e ot’er is to belong to Gan Dialect. In t’e paper, field work and comparison are t’e basic two met’ods to tackle t’e problem. It describes t’e P’onological visage of 12 local dialects in Yueyang County from t’e following t’ree aspects suc’as onset, rime and tone. By t’e comparison from t’e p’onological aspect, t’e paper analyses t’e p’onological c’aracteristics of t’e 12 local dialects. It found t’at: on one ’and, it is very identical in t’e inner of t’e local dialects, suc’ as t’e 18 c’aracter generalized in t’e paper; on t’e ot’er ’and, it ’as obvious differences. Based on it, t’e paper discusses t’e affinity of 12 local dialects by t’e p’onological c’aracters of Xiang Dialect and Gan Dialect. We consider t’at: Pingdi, Xiangsi, Yuetian pertain to Datong Subgroup of Gan Dialect; Gongtian pertains to C’angjing Subgroup of Gan Dialect; Rongjiawan, Lujiao, ’uangs’ajie pertain to C’angyi subgroup of Xiang Dialect; Z’angguying, Gangkou, Baixiang, Xinkai, Xinqiang w’ic’ lie to between Rongjiawan and Gongtian, are a kind of compound dialect. T’e five local Dialects based on t’e Old Xiang Dialects and influenced by t’e extending Gan Dialect and t’e immigrants from Jiangxi in t’e Tang and Song Dynasty. T’e conclusion corresponds to t’e language fact and ’as continuity in geograp’ical environment and geograp’ical dialectology. At t’e same time, it is good for ’aving a clear view of dialectical contacts in t’e border on Xiang Dialect and Gan Dialect. It corresponds to t’e rules of dialectical division into regions, too.
